Teresa Said:

What is the most common genetic disease in the world?

We Answered:

Depends.....

What type of genetic disorder? Among a certain race/group or population as a whole?

Also depends on where you do the research...there are over 1000 genetic disorders identified...10-15 are more common than all the rest...all most all of them are rather rare.

Sickle cell is common, but really only among African American/Black individuals...less common in other races. In the US (according to one site), cystic fibrosis is the most common (5% of the population are carriers), another website from the UK indicated that hereditary hyperlipidemia was the most common. Another website for Europe states that the most common genetic disorder for the whole continent of Europe was a for of genetic liver disorder that resulted in a iron overload.

Yet another site, simply listed the 12 most common (in no particular order) that are tested for:
* Cystic Fibrosis
* Down Syndrome
* Fragile X Syndrome
* Inherited Thrombophilias
* Klinefelter Syndrome
* Open neural tube defects
* Sickle Cell Disease
* Triple X Syndrome
* Thalassemia
* Trisomy 13
* Trisomy 18
* Turner Syndrome

Sorry, but not sure there is an exact answer to your question....especially when you consider..."how many people may have a genetic disorder, and not have the medical capacities available to diagnose, and record the disorder...."

Nicole Said:

Can baldness be considered as a genetic disease?

We Answered:

It is a genetic trait, commonly passed from your Mother's side of the family. I'd look for Male Pattern Baldness and see if it's classified as a disease.

If asthma, high blood pressure or cholesterol runs in your family those could definitely be considered diseases (although controllable).
