Kidney Diseases In Children

Antonio Said:

My mum has polycystic kidney disease and i don't - its hereditry but will i still be a carrier?

We Answered:

50 percent chance of developing it. Not tested for as there is nothing that can be done anyways.
Not always genetically based.
50 percent chance of passing it on to your children if you are a carrier.

You can be tested to see if you are a carrier now. Some carriers choose not to have children.
See a geneticist for counselling.

Eduardo Said:

Can I have another child after being diagnosed with chronic kidney disease?

We Answered:

Chronic kidney disease probably requires medication -- correct? You need to find out if there is such a medication which is compatible with pregnancy. If you don't want to wait until you can talk to a doctor, try calling a 24-hour pharmacy and asking a pharmacist.

Darrell Said:

Would you have another child after being diagnosed with kidney disease?

We Answered:

My best friend has kidney disease as well. I forget what hers is called but she will need a double kidney transplant in the next few years. She has had this disease for 7 years. She has had two healthy babies since finding out. Her pregnancies were both high risk, and she was hospitalized a lot. They really want another baby, but are holding off because of all the medication she has to take. While pregnant, she cant take them and it makes her worse off. If you want another baby and can handle the stress and sickness then that is your choice. You have to do what you and your husband think is right and what you can handle.
