Autoimmune Disease Lupus
Toni Said:
Can lupus be a cause of pancreatitis since lupus is an autoimmune disease? We Answered:
I am sorry your mom is having such a hard time of it. Yes, lupus can attack any organ in the body. But there can be many other reasons for pancreatitis. It is important to let the doctors do the diagnosing. Lupus is a complex disease and not easy to diagnose. And they will not make a diagnosis of lupus until everything else is ruled out.Your mom needs to have opend discussions with her doctor to find out what he/she is exploring. If the doctor refuses to communicate with her, it may be time to fire that one and get a new one.

A question about the autoimmune disease Lupus..?We Answered:
TTC #1,There are three different types of lupus - Discoid(cutaneous) lupus, Systemic lupus & Drug-induced lupus. In approximately 10% of cases of discoid lupus, it evolves & develops into systemic lupus. There is currently no single test that can definitely say whether a person has lupus or not. Lupus is an autoimmune disease. Autoimmune diseases are illnesses that occur when the body's tissues are attacked by its own immune system. The precise reason for the abnormal autoimmunity that causes lupus is not known. Inherited genes, viruses, ultraviolet light, and drugs may all play some role. This means that lupus itself is not passed from parents to their children but that the predisposition to develop the disease is passed down, so the genes some people inherit seem to increase the tendency of developing autoimmune diseases, and autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and immune thyroid disorders are more common among relatives of patients with lupus than the general population. Some scientists believe that the immune system in lupus patients is more easily stimulated by external factors like viruses or ultraviolet light. Sometimes, symptoms of lupus can be precipitated or aggravated by only a brief period of sun exposure. Recent research provides direct evidence that a key enzyme's failure to dispose of dying cells contributes to SLE. Accordingly, a genetic mutation that disrupts the body's cellular waste disposal may be involved in the beginning of SLE.

Autoimmune disease?We Answered:
Yes, chances are higher and no, antibiotics can do more harm than good in most. If the parent has Lupus, and the child has possible or probable MS.The likelihood is that the child has Antiphospholipid Syndrome There is no sure bet on autoimmune diseases. I had one passed down from My father's side, where none of my other siblings got this, nor my parents, but both of my children now have this. I also have one from my Mother's side and again, neither parent or my siblings got this. So far my children test negative, and I pray it stays that way. These diseases are still considered family grouped, but it is my belief that there are more environmental triggers as well as knowledge on this causing more and more diagnoses.Kenneth Said:
If my ANA's are increased, what is the chance I have lupus or another autoimmune disease? We Answered:
Elevated ANA can mean a number of different issues. The usual culprit is A.I. (auto immune) but also may something less serious.Depending on which auto immune you are asking about , the answer to your question "how bad are they?" can range in seriousness. I have been living with sjogren's syndrome, lupus, r/a, vasculitis, well let me just say, a number of different auto immune illnesses since I was 24 ( I am now 38). They have been a challange to live with, but the key word is, I have been LIVING with them. I prefer to look at it like this " I have my A.I. illnesses, THEY dont have ME!".
If you are dxed with an a.i. illness, the earlier they find it, usually the better the treatment is. There is a number of different tests that must be done to be 100% sure you have an a.i. illness. Make sure you go thru the tests to ensure proper diagnosis. Such as with sjogren's , the best test is the lip biopsy, where they take one small gland ( or a few) that is on the inside of your bottom lip and tests them for s.s.. Different tests for different A.i. illnesses.
I have an auto immune group if you would like more info, feel free to contact us at

Good Luck and please let me know what you find out.( it may be a long process ) God bless you,Candy

What are all of the treatments for the autoimmune disease lupus? We Answered:
Lupus is an autoimmune disease so the principal treatment is immunosuppressive medication. The severity of the disease determines what specific drugs are used. Mild lupus may be treated simply with NSAIDs and corticosteroids. More severe cases of the disease may require more drastic options such as cytotoxic agents that kill some of the cells of the immune system.EDIT: Examples of cytotoxic agents include azathioprine, mycophenylate mofetil, cyclophosphamide, etc.
