Smoke-free Oak Park....Good for People

Secondhand Smoke hurts those exposed to it even for a short period of time.

Secondhand smoke is the number one trigger of asthma attacks and increases the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Secondhand smoke is the third leading cause of preventable death in this country, killing approximately 65,000 nonsmokers in the U.S. each year, more than the number killed in car accidents annually.
Children exposed to secondhand smoke have higher rates of respiratory and ear infections.
Short-term exposure to secondhand smoke does real damage, far beyond the stench and irritation. Exposure to secondhand smoke for a half-hour damages the functioning of the ear.
Secondhand smoke is classified by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a carcinogen and contains more than 4,000 chemicals, including 69 which cause cancer.
Smoke-filled areas have up to six times the air pollution as a busy highway.

Smoke-free Oak Park...Good for Business
Oak Park and residents of surrounding communities overwhelmingly support making all indoor public places, including restaurants and bars, smoke-free. A recent survey by a national research firm indicated that 66% of Oak Parkers support a strong clean indoor air ordinance in the village.

In addition, the survey found that over 20% of Oak Park residents who identified themselves as frequent diners in the survey had left the community recently to find a smoke-free restaurant in which to dine.

Nearly 90% of Oak Park residents do not smoke. And of those who do, the survey found that 24% of them prefer to sit in the non-smoking sections when dining out.

The evidence is clear. The public wants smoke-free environments to live, work and play.
