Around the world and across the country, communities have taken action to protect the public from the dangers of secondhand smoke. Most recently, Italy has gone smoke-free.
In Illinois, current state law preempts all but twenty cities and villages from enacting local ordinances stronger than the Illinois Clean Indoor Air Act which allows smoking in workplaces, but limits it to designated smoking areas. Two of the twenty eligible communities, Wilmette and Skokie , have passed smoke-free ordinances and a number of others are considering new ordinances.
Seven states have moved to protect their residents from secondhand smoke. In addition, hundreds of other communities across the country have individually passed smoke-free ordinances. It's critical for communities to pass clean indoor air ordinances to convince state legislatures to follow suit and pass a state law.
